With numerous studies regarding the importance of pre-K education, there is a growing trend in childcare centers to offer educational enrichment programs to supplement the learning that is already occurring. Some large national childcare centers have their own enrichment programs that are offered several times per year for several weeks at a time. These programs are optional and parents are required to pay extra if they use this service.
Some smaller locally-owned childcare centers are feeling the heat to be able to offer the same types of programs. The biggest issue these smaller centers face is that they don't have a nationally-recognized curriculum to use and it is very cost prohibitive for them to retain staff for these courses.
From the parents' side, I think its a great thing to be able to pick and choose the additional classes that I want my child to take. There has been a large push in some areas of the country to bring programs such as Spanish (and other languages), computers, music, dance, gymnastics, etc. right into the childcare center. In addition, this eases the stress of working parents since their children can attend these types of programs during the day. This allows a more relaxed, stressfree evening and weekend for the entire family!
If you are a parent of a child that attends a childcare facility at least 30 hours per week, what are your thoughts on these types of programs?
